Day 338: Overcoming the World

Author: Don Bailey

Today’s Scripture: 1 John 5:1-5.

Central Thought: Our faith in God helps us overcome the temptations of the world.

The television docudrama showed the F4 tornado barreling down upon the small town, and worse yet, upon the family huddled in the basement of their small house. On the surface, it looked like there was no chance of survival. The half-mile-wide twister should make kindling of their small house. Though the storm levels their house, the family crawls out of their basement with nothing more than small cuts and scratches.

We often admire those who have overcome seemingly impossible odds. In today’s reading, we learn the key to overcoming the greatest obstacle of all—sin. John says the key to overcoming the sinful pressures of the world is by being born again. Those who are in Christ have the help of the Spirit to stand against these pressures. Our continued faith in God helps us to be stronger in standing for Him.

When we consider the great help God offers us to stand against the world, we need to thank Him richly. We also need to develop our faith so that we will be stronger in the face of the opposition the world directs our way.

Devotional Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the strength I need to stand against sin.

Today’s Bible Reading: Hosea 1:1-3:5; 1 John 5:1-21; Psalm 124:1-8; Proverbs 29:5-8
