Day 40: Better Than a Pile of Dirt

Author: Robert Hayes

Today’s Scripture: Proverbs 8:14-26

Central Thought: God’s promises are true

In 1986, Geraldo Rivera convinced the American public that he had discovered the vault that was used by the notorious gangster Al Capone. Rivera publicized that he would be featured on national television on April 21, 1986, as he lead a team to open the vault. Viewers sat in front of their televisions for nearly an hour as the team excavated the stone walls of the basement of the Lexington Hotel in Chicago. The anticipated treasure never materialized. The only reward for the hour spent working and watching was a pile of ordinary dirt.

As Christians, we can have confidence that the rewards we are promised in Scripture will materialize. God is not interested in whether or not we gather television ratings. He does not make promises that hold no hope to get us to follow Him and then produce nothing in the end. His promises are sure.

The writer of Proverbs tells us to go on a hunt of our own. He assures us that we will not be surprised by a pile of worthless dirt at the end of our search. The rewards we find will be better than the purest gold and sterling silver. We will not find artifacts or material treasure. We will find God. And I think you will agree that the treasure we find will be much better than a pile of dirt.

Devotional Prayer: God, help me to seek You with all of my strength.
