Day 221: God Supports Us

Author: Nancy A. Stevens

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 30:1-12

Central Thought: God wants us to praise Him for upholding and carrying us every day.

Imagine that you are floating in the warm ocean waters off a tropical beach. The sky is dotted with marshmallow clouds, and a gentle breeze offsets the sun’s heat. For a few hours you relax as the waves gently wash over you. Eventually you decide to head for the shore to get something to eat. As you get closer to the beach, you stand on your legs and begin to walk.

‘I feel like I weigh twice as much as I did before!” you exclaim. ‘My legs feel too weak to carry my body.” Your body weight has not changed; however, for the past few hours the water has been supporting your weight. Now you must carry the whole load yourself.

When things are going well in our lives, we often don’t realize the Lord is carrying us and supporting us. Sometimes He allows difficulties so we will understand and appreciate the extent to which He upholds, sustains, and blesses us. David said, ‘When I felt secure, I said, ‘I will never be shaken.’ O Lord, when you favored me, you made my mountain stand firm; but when you hid your face, I was dismayed” (Psalm 30:6-7, NIV).

After God answered David’s prayers, turning his mourning into dancing, David realized that God had delivered him and ‘clothed [him] with joy,” so that he would praise God and tell others of God’s goodness (30:11-12).

Devotional Prayer: Father, help us to remember to be thankful for all the ways You bless us and support us each day and to share Your goodness with others.
