Day 218: Where Does Your Faith Rest?

Today’s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:1-4

Central Thought: Faith must rest in the power of God, not human wisdom.

‘It’s not worth a Continental.” This popular expression came about when the Continental Congress authorized paper money to be issued to finance America’s war for independence. The notes were known as ‘Continentals,” but would only be redeemable if the colonies won their independence. They rapidly declined in value because they were overprinted and lacked trust by the public. Thus, the expression: ‘not worth a Continental.” What undermined the value of the money was the fear that the Continental Congress did not have the power or ability to pay the promised value of the notes.

The apostle Paul wanted to assure the believers in Corinth that their faith was based on something that would endure. That is why he did not appeal to faulty human wisdom, but to the wisdom of God that was demonstrated by the defeat of sin by the power of the crucified and risen Christ. His message was not simply words, but it included the ‘demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” (1 Corinthians 2:4-5).

God still works in our hearts and lives today, making us new creations in Christ and changing us from the inside out as the Spirit demonstrates His power in our lives. He does this that our faith might rest in the power of God. We can always trust that God has the power to deliver what He has promised.

Devotional Prayer: God, thank You that You revealed Your power in me when you saved me and changed me. Continue to reveal Your power in my life that my faith may rest in You.
