Day 239: We Can Be Free
Author: Don BaileyToday’s Scripture: Psalm 40:11-12
Central Thought: We can find hope when we feel overwhelmed by our sins.
They thought they were safe in their second floor apartment. Surely no hurricane would be strong enough to sweep them from this tall sturdy building. But when Hurricane Camille swept ashore on the Mississippi coast, they were swept from their apartment and swept inland over half a mile by the force of the powerful waves. They thought they were prepared, but they were overwhelmed by the unexpected force.
In today’s reading, David was overwhelmed by his own sins. What may have begun as a simple and harmless act (in David’s mind, at least) led to very painful, and even deadly, consequences. The baby born out of his affair with Bathsheba died as a result of David’s actions. Now, trapped by his sins, David did not see any way out. Yet, he pleaded with God for mercy. David found mercy when he called out to God.
God awaits the cry for mercy from all who desire to be free from their overwhelming bondage to sin. As David discovered, forgiveness and mercy await anyone who calls on the Lord. He desires to forgive all who will call on Him today.
Devotional Prayer: Thank You for forgiving me and being present to help me live for You.
