Day 232: Who Knows?
Author: David ThomasToday’s Scripture: Esther 4:14
Central Thought: God’s purposes in our lives are not always apparent. At times we are called upon to obey out of faith.
‘Who knows?” It is interesting that Mordecai’s words to Esther included that phrase. ‘Who knows” implies such words as perhaps, possibly, and maybe. Perhaps this is the reason that Esther had ascended to her position. But who knows for sure?
Rick Warren’s popular book, The Purpose-Driven Life, made ‘purpose” a buzzword among Christians. Life becomes so much easier when we remember that God has created each of us with a specific purpose. Obedience also becomes easier. Sometimes we may think, ‘If I only knew the purpose of this.”
Mordecai’s words to Esther emphasized the need for her to obey God, raising the thought that every step in her life had been part of His plan to prepare her for this moment. But before this moment, she also had been obedient on many occasions even though she did not know what purpose those steps were leading her toward.
Sometimes we know why God has placed us in a particular situation. Sometimes we learn later. Other times, we may never know. Regardless, we are always to obey Him, even in those times when we do not know why.
‘Who knows?” God knows, and that is reason enough to obey.
Devotional Prayer: Lord, may I always obey Your will. In the times when things do not make complete sense to me, may I maintain complete trust in You.
