Day 95: Following the Leader

Author: Triana Burroughs

Today’s Scripture: Luke 11:1

Central Thought: Following the godly example of others can lead us to a more Christ-like life.

It always amazes me to watch the children in our Sunday school as they interact. They are always so full of life and energy. One favorite game they play is ‘Follow the Leader.” The younger kids love doing what the older kids are doing, no matter what it is. This helps them to feel a part and to feel included. It also helps them to grow, stretch, and mature.

Christ’s disciples seemed to understand this philosophy when they asked Him to teach them how to pray like John’s disciples prayed. Somewhere this group of men had witnessed John’s disciples praying with such devotion that they realized they were missing something in their own prayer life. They had witnessed the ‘older kids” having something that they were lacking.

As we grow in our spiritual walk, God will bring ‘older kids” into our path for the same reason he brought John’s disciples into the path of the original twelve. God wants to draw us closer to Him, and one of the ways He does that is to provide a good, solid witness through other believers. As we watch their example and continuously confirm with God His direction for our lives, we will draw closer to the Source. And as we come alongside our fellow believers, we will become one of the ‘older kids.”

Be alert to the great leaders who have come before you, but also be aware that those who are coming after you need a godly example. Be sure the path you are forging leads to the Father.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, help me to be quick to learn from those You have set before me as examples. Help me, in turn, to be a godly example for others.
