Day 94: Two Measures
Author: Triana BurroughsToday’s Scripture: Deuteronomy 25:13-16
Central Thought: We must be obedient to boldly speak the name of Christ.
I remember watching a comedy a few years ago where someone was measuring out grain for payment. The buyer was cheating by using an unbalanced scale. He was careful to be the one to place the grain on the level, but when his back was turned the seller set some of the grain down and it tipped the scale completely over! The man was discovered as a cheat and five minutes of fast-paced, fun-filled pandemonium ensued.
As funny as this was onscreen, it is sad when it becomes a representation of our daily life. Oftentimes, without meaning to, we have two standards. When we interact with fellow believers, we proudly praise the Lord for what He has done for us. But when we interact with non-believers, we tend to forsake our spirit-filled language and keep silent about the Lord
Why the double standard? Are we afraid of persecution? Are we afraid of being labeled as a ‘Bible thumper”?
When Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus, he was in chains for speaking about his faith. Even from his imprisonment, he urged his fellow believers to pray that he would continue to speak boldly (see Ephesians 6:20). Paul was not afraid to be labeled as a follower of Christ or even to be held captive. What Paul was most concerned about was not speaking out for the Lord.
Throw out the scales. Don’t let your fear outweigh the message of Christ’s love. Start this day by boldly blessing all that you meet. Tell them what a glorious day God has created just for them! Speak a word of encouragement over everyone you come in contact with. God will bless that simple act of obedience.
Devotional Prayer: Lord, help me to always be ready to tell others about what You have done for me and what You can do for them.
