Day 93: Letting Go and Getting Back

Author: Triana Burroughs

Today’s Scripture: Luke 10:4

Central Thought: We must release all we have if we are to serve the Lord.

My most prized possession is a porcelain doll I bought ten years ago. She stands two feet tall and has real dark black hair, a velvet dress, and a 14k gold necklace with matching earrings. Other than my child and my husband, this doll would be rescued first if there were a fire. I would risk my earthly life to save my most beloved possession. But I would not risk my spiritual life for anyone or anything.

In Luke 10, Christ sends out seventy-two people to go and share His immanent arrival. He tells these messengers that they are not to take any material possessions with them, not even sandals. They are to pack nothing!

It seems like an odd command to send a person on a journey without a change of clothing. Why would Jesus instruct them in this manner? Because He knew that if these men were to go before Him, they had to be focused on God’s kingdom. To take any personal baggage would only distract the messengers from their true purpose.

Christ wants us to lay our possessions aside. He is not telling us to dump them in the trash but that they should not come between us and Him. The moment we allow something or someone to distract us from the call of God so that we stray from His path and His will is the moment our spiritual life is placed at risk.

If the Lord is to be first, we must take inventory and set aside that which stands in the way of a relationship with Him. And that includes my beloved doll. I urge you to release all you have to the Lord. He will give back what He wants you to keep.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, help me to release all I have to You and accept from You what You want me to have.
