The Holy Spirit, our Comforter.
In this series, we are going to focus on and talk about the precious Holy Spirit. We know that the Holy Spirit is the third part of the Trinity of God, and like God, He is eternal and has the attributes of our God. The Spirit is not a thing, but he is a being, and he is divine. As Christians we believe in God as a Trinity, the Father, the Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
In the lessons to come, we will learn about many different things regarding the Holy Spirit. In this lesson, we are going to talk about something very important regarding the Spirit.
We begin with some words from our Lord Jesus in John 14 and 16.
John 14:16-17, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter to be with you forever: 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” (NIV)
And John 16:7, “But I tell you the truth, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” (NIV)
In both verses, Christ mentioned that when he leaves the world after his resurrection, he will send and give the Holy Spirit to believers. What is interesting about this is the name that Jesus used for the Spirit. He called him the Comforter. This word in our Bible was translated from the Greek word paraclete. This means someone who is with or in us or at our side. Comforter is used in English for this paraclete. It also has the idea of a helper. So, the Holy Spirit is with us, and he is our comforter and helper. We all need a lot of this help and comfort that the Spirit gives us. How good it is that the Holy Spirit is with us always. What a blessing this is.
When someone receives Christ as Savior, that person is forgiven and changed. They are new creatures because the Holy Spirit enters their life and now lives within them. That is why we are Christians and different. How beautiful it is that this comforter and helper now live in us. What does the Spirit do within us? Well, as his name says, he comforts and helps us. As a Christian, the help you need already resides in you. The comforter is within for comfort and help.
Practically speaking, if you need comfort today because of something that has happened to you or because of some trial, you only need to ask the Lord for his help, and through the Spirit who is already within you, the comfort and strength you need will come. Sometimes we make the mistake of looking for help everywhere when we already have the answer within us through the Holy Spirit.
There are many benefits for us through the Spirit within. As we already mentioned, there is comfort and help. There are also peace and joy that the Spirit gives us. He guides us, strengthens us, and gives us wisdom as well. He gives us more faith and hope and many other blessings too.
Another important thing is that the Spirit always helps us to understand the Bible well. He is also called the Spirit of truth, and the Bible is truth, so the Spirit helps us through the Bible. That is why it is important to read and memorize the Bible. When we have these promises within us, the Spirit will help us to remember and apply all these promises. For example, the Bible says in 1 Peter 2:24, “By his wounds you have been healed.” (NIV) Speaking of the wounds that Christ received, and that is why we have healing today. Well, the Spirit helps us remember this promise and helps us have faith to receive what this promise says, that is, our healing. And it is the same with other needs as well.
I want to end with one more verse. Look at Romans 8:11: “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.” (NIV) How wonderful that the Holy Spirit is giving life to our bodies and lives. The Comforter is already within you if you are a Christian, and He is there to help and comfort you.
You should ask for His help today, and if you are not a Christian and do not have the Spirit within you, it is time to receive Christ and have this blessed Holy Spirit in your life.
