God is Omnipotent.
In the previous lesson, we talked about how God is omniscient and omnipresent. In this lesson, we are going to continue with this topic by talking about another very important attribute of God. God is omnipotent, meaning he is all-powerful.
Let’s look at some verses that show something of this power of God.
The first verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1, says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (NIV) And Psalm 33:6 shows how God did it. It says, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth.” (NIV) What a thing! God made everything just by saying it. He didn’t need engineers or architects or money; he just spoke, and everything was created. That is a lot of power.
Isaiah had a vision of God in Isaiah 6:1: “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.” (NIV) This high and exalted throne is the center of power for the entire universe because it is the throne of our God. How powerful and great our God is. Almost the entire Bible is a display of this divine power. From beginning to end.
Matthew 19:26 and Luke 1:37 say that nothing is impossible for God, and that is true because he is omnipotent. We think of Moses and the Israelites when they crossed the Red Sea on dry land because God divided the sea for them to pass through. He fed them for 40 years by giving them bread from heaven every day, which was called manna. When the people of Israel finally entered the Promised Land, they all crossed the Jordan River as they did at the Red Sea on dry land because God again parted the waters of the river. Time and again, God performed great miracles for His people. He rescued the three young men from a fiery furnace in Daniel chapter 3. They were thrown into this burning furnace and were not burned, and they came out unharmed. And in chapter 6, God rescued Daniel from the lions’ den. He spent the whole night in this den with hungry lions and suffered no harm. God is powerful and can protect us.
When Christ came into the world and began his ministry, he performed many miracles and wonders, showing the power of God. He healed and delivered many by the great power of God and raised several from the dead. But something very beautiful is that even after he ascended to heaven in Acts 1, the apostles and Christians continued to see miracles and the power of God manifested through them. God performed great miracles in the early church. And that is why the church always grew, because they had this power of God flowing in and through them. In this church, many were healed, delivered, restored, and even raised from the dead by the power of God.
A very great demonstration of God’s power is what happened after Jesus’ death on the cross. He was nailed to that cross and spent about six hours suffering, receiving the punishment for all our sins. And finally, he died and was buried. But three days later, very early in the morning, the power of God touched this dead body, and Christ was raised from the dead and became the victor over death and sin and the world and the devil. Now he reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords in heaven. And all this is a sign that our God is omnipotent.
Look at what Paul wrote in Ephesians 1. It is part of a prayer he prayed for the church in Ephesus. Ephesians 1:19-22, “And how incomparable is the greatness of his power in favor of those of us who believe. That power is the great and effective strength 20 that God exercised in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above every government and authority, power and dominion, and every other name that is invoked, not only in this world but also in the world to come. 22 God subjected all things to Christ and gave him as head over all things to the church.” (NIV)
Paul prayed that they might experience this divine power of God that he manifested in the resurrection. God is the same today; his power has not changed or diminished. The good news today is that God has the power to touch you today. He can forgive and save you today. But he can also heal and deliver and strengthen you or do whatever is needed today. That is because he is very powerful and because he loves us very much. God’s power is available today to help you in your situation. How wonderful that our God is omnipotent. Thank God for this wonderful attribute of his.
