Matthew 6:19-21 Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Your treasure is tied to your heart.
Luke 12:13-15, 34 A person in the crowd got Jesus’ attention.
Person in the Crowd: Teacher, intervene and tell my brother to share the family inheritance with me.
Jesus: Since when am I your judge or arbitrator?
Then He used that opportunity to speak to the crowd.
Jesus: You’d better be on your guard against any type of greed, for a person’s life is not about having a lot of possessions…Your treasure will be stored in the heavens, and since your treasure is there, your heart will be lodged there as well.
3 Philosophies of Money:
- The Greedy – What’s yours is mine and I’m going to TAKE it.
- The Guarded -What’s mine is mine and I’m going to KEEP it.
- The Giver – What’s mine is GOD’S and I’m going to SHARE it.
How to be freed from greed:
- Remember who the owner really is – STEWARDSHIP
- Live beneath my means – CONTENTMENT
- Be thankful for what I have – GRATITUDE
- Focus on what I can give, not on what I can get – GENEROSITY
