3 Difficult Choices

A series on the difficult choices that Jesus calls us to make by Dave Beroth.

Will You Show Love?

The vocabulary of the world in which we live clearly and consistently points in one direction. In fact, what do the following words have in common? Achievement, promotion, progress, increases, advancement, elevation and upgrades.

All of them point in the same direction: upward. That is how we are conditioned to think in our society. Success is measured by how far people are able to move in one direction and in one direction only: upward.

When life challenges us to take a different direction, what kind of thinking empowers us to carry on with joy and not lose our passion? What do you need to know in order to serve people, even those not committed to your success?

Consider the mindset behind Jesus’ actions and words the night he washed the dirty feet of His disciples.

In John 13, John describes for us what Jesus was thinking. Even more importantly, he tells us three things Jesus knew that empowered him to move in the right direction those last few hours in the upper room.

What did Jesus know? He knew time was of the essence, so he showed the depths of His love.

Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
– John 13:1, New International Version

Jesus knew he was rapidly approaching the most important moments of life. He knew the pain and agony of the cross was imminent!

Here is the Question: If you knew you would die a terrible death tomorrow, on what would you focus?

I would probably be thinking about myself and what I’m about to go through. I wish I could say otherwise. I know this about myself because of my reactions in a couple of rough situations where my drive for self-preservation kicked in strong.
